Saint Mary's Receive "A" Ranking for Hospital Safety

RENO, Nev. – Wednesday, May 15, 2013 – Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center has received an "A" Hospital Patient Safety score from Leapfrog, a national leader and advocate of hospital transparency. Saint Mary's was the only hospital in the region to receive an "A" ranking. Leapfrog reviews hospital safety metrics and ensures organizations have procedures in place to protect patients from errors, accidents and injuries.

"Patient safety is a top priority at Saint Mary's and we focus on making sure our patients are in a safe and comfortable environment every single day," said Helen Lidholm, CEO at Saint Mary's. "We value our patients and this ranking displays how important safety and well-being is to our organization. The community relies on trustworthy providers that adhere to national safety initiatives and we are very proud to lead the region in this effort."

The Hospital Safety Score is the only publicly accessible standard of hospital safety available free to the public. Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog's eight-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score methodology has been analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety.

The panel uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single grade representing a hospital's overall success in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. Metrics include surgical safety, falls and trauma, infection ratios, nursing care and follow-through, adherence to safety protocols and more.
