LABORATORIANS AT SAINT MARY'S REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

SALUTED DURING LAB WEEK

RENO, Nev. – Monday, April 21, 2014 – National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 20-26, is a time to honor the more than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals across the nation who perform and interpret more than 10 Billion laboratory tests a year that save lives and keep people healthy. Pathologists and laboratory technologists/scientists and technicians at Saint Mary's are among the many unsung heroes of medical healthcare.

Since lab professionals often work behind the scenes, few people know that the critical testing they perform every day saves lives, reduces morbidity, and helps control the cost of care. Today, with advances in analytical science and automation–and as cost pressures reduce patient stays in the hospital; work in the laboratory is more important than ever. Using state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, laboratory professionals help to prevent disease by detecting unknown health problems and by aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of existing conditions by giving accurate, timely test results. The laboratory test results comprise an estimated seventy percent of the patient's medical records and are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.

Medical laboratory professionals represent a variety of specialties, including pathologists, medical technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, phlebotomy technicians, clinical chemists, microbiologists, laboratory managers, and medical educators, to name a few.
