Baby boy born minutes after midnight becomes first baby born in Reno-Sparks

RENO, Nev. – Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2014 – Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center is proud to announce the arrival of the first baby born in 2014. A baby boy was born three minutes after midnight. The healthy little bundle of joy weighs 7 lbs 5 oz and measures 21 inches. Parents, Jenny Sofa and Julio Mendoza, are very excited for their first child.

"We are always excited to welcome in the first baby of the New Year," said Marie Luback-Neves, RN, director of Saint Mary's Family Birthing Center. "This is one of those special moments at the hospital and Saint Mary's is proud to have delivered another healthy baby."

Saint Mary's has delivered babies in northern Nevada for over 105 years and continues to offer a family-centered care philosophy during the labor and delivery experience. The Family Birthing Center is also home to the T.J. and Debbie Day Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, specialized in caring for newborns as well as a Pediatric Unit for children aged zero to 18 that are admitted to the hospital.
