Saint Mary's Launches Center for Neurovascular Care Led by Dr. Aaron C. Heide

Led by Aaron C. Heide, MD the Center will have Nevada's only accredited Neurovascular Ultrasound Lab

RENO, Nev. – Wednesday, May 7, 2014 – Saint Mary's now offers a comprehensive program designed for patients suffering from stroke, neurologic and vascular disorders. Led by stroke fellowship trained vascular neurologist, Aaron C. Heide, MD the new Center for Neurovascular Care will provide patients with greater access to specialty care in northern Nevada. The Center is now accepting patients and is located at 645 N. Arlington Ave., Suite 655.

Aaron C. Heide, MD went to the University of Washington in Seattle for his undergraduate and medical school degrees. While receiving his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and his medical degree, he was an integral part of the University's research program for Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Heide then went on to complete a neurology residency at Tufts University in Boston, Mass. and a stroke fellowship at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington, Mass. During his fellowship he received the high level of training in acute and chronic management of stroke that would allow him to be able to develop and direct a JCAHO certified stroke center in his first year of practice. Dr. Heide has an extensive research background, is a published author and is active in organizations including the American Heart and Stroke Association, American Academy of Neurology and the Neurocritical Society. He is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology.

Saint Mary's Center for Neurovascular Care will also include access to a new Telemedicine program that provides rapid treatment for patients that need access to a specialist. Patients will be able to see a specialist same-day, which will support early treatment and be a mechanism for life-saving care.

"Telemedicine uses modern technology to connect with patients and their providers instantly. There is not waiting period and treatment is administered immediately," said Aaron Heide, MD, Medical Director of Saint Mary's Center for Neurovascular Care. "A patient suffering from a stroke will lose 1.9 million brain cells so it is imperative to have treatment options that are instant. Telemedicine is reliable and a means to ensure patients have a long, healthy life."

Telemedicine combines modern technology with health care delivery into a streamlined process that has proven its ability to eliminate errors, improve communication with patients and providers and reduce inefficiencies. In essence, telemedicine is the use of medical information that is transferred via electronic communications in real-time to provide interactive health care. Patients can now utilize the service through their primary care provider, when they are hospitalized and/or being treated in an Emergency Room.

The majority of patients who use telemedicine include those who have had a stroke, neurological condition, chronic pain and weakness, acute headaches and more. In addition to accessing services remotely, patients receive in-person follow-up care by Dr. Heide on a monthly basis. Additionally, patients who suffer from epilepsy/seizures, Parkinson's disease/movement disorders, memory loss or dementia, dizziness/vertigo, or speech and vision changes can now be treated through Saint Mary's Center for Neurovascular Care.

In addition to the robust services of the new Center, Saint Mary's will have Nevada's only nationally accredited Neurovascular Ultrasound Lab. The lab uses a non-invasive approach and state-of-the-art equipment to provide comprehensive assessments of blood flow to the brain. The ultrasound studies are performed by highly qualified technologists and interpreted by Dr. Heide.

Dr. Heide is now accepting patients and same-day appointments. Call 770-6465 to learn more or visit
