Saint Mary's Offers Weekend Mammography Clinics

RENO, Nev. – Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to help focus attention on the importance of having an early detection plan for this potentially fatal disease, Saint Mary's Imaging Services is offering $89 mammograms for the remainder of the year. To expand access for patients, Saint Mary's will also be offering weekend mammography clinics at their south Reno campus on 18653 Wedge Parkway on Saturday, October 18 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives and when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the five year survival rate is 98 percent. The American Cancer Society suggests that women ages 40 and older who have previously shown no symptoms of breast cancer should undergo a yearly mammogram. For women ages 20-39 who are also without previous symptoms, a clinical breast examination is recommended once every three years, with self-examination occurring on a monthly basis.

While mammography remains the golden standard for early detection, finding cancers in women with dense breast tissue can be limited with mammography alone. Breast density is one of the strongest predictors of the limitations of mammography screening to detect cancer and nearly 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue. That is why an Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) screening is recommended in conjunction with a mammography for women with dense breast tissue. ABUS screening, as a compliment to traditional mammography, provides a clearer image of the breast tissue so a provider may better differentiate healthy and cancerous tissue.
