SCREENING SAVES LIVES – IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

Saint Mary's offers affordable breast cancer screenings and Saturday appointments

RENO, Nev. – Monday, Oct. 5, 2015 – October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to help focus attention on the importance of having an early detection plan, Saint Mary's wants to remind the community that it's never too late for your annual mammogram or secondary dense tissue screening. During the month of October, for cash patients, mammograms will be offered for $89 and ABUS dense breast tissue screening will only be $125. To expand access for patients, Saint Mary's will also offer weekend mammography clinics at their south Reno campus on 18653 Wedge Parkway.

About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives and when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. The American Cancer Society suggests that women ages 40 and older who have previously shown no symptoms of breast cancer should undergo a yearly mammogram. For women ages 20-39 who are also without previous symptoms, a clinical breast examination is recommended once every three years, with self-examination occurring on a monthly basis.

While mammography remains the golden standard for early detection, finding cancers in women with dense breast tissue can be limited with mammography alone. Breast density is one of the strongest predictors of the limitations of mammography screening to detect cancer and nearly 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue. That is why an Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) screening is recommended in conjunction with a mammography for women with dense breast tissue. ABUS screening, as a compliment to traditional mammography, provides a clearer image of the breast tissue so a provider may better differentiate healthy and cancerous tissue.

To schedule your mammogram, or for more information about ABUS and other imaging services offered at Saint Mary's, call 775-770-3187 or visit saintmarysreno.com/imaging. To schedule a Saturday appointment at Saint Mary's south Reno location, call 775-770-7171.
