SAINT MARY'S FOCUSES ON PREVENTION WITH LAUNCH OF FLU AND FIT – A CAMPAIGN FOCUSED ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS

RENO, Nev. – Wednesday, September 9, 2015 – Saint Mary's Medical Group will soon launch a community campaign, Flu and Fit, designed to encourage patients to get their annual flu vaccine along with schedule regular screenings. A variety of clinics will be offered throughout the community beginning mid-September and ending in early November.

"Flu and Fit is a new annual campaign focused on educating patients about the importance of annual screenings and well checks," said Lori Martin, Saint Mary's Medical Group executive director of clinical operations. "Diseases and other conditions can be quickly caught in the earliest stages and managed appropriately if you are screened. It's important that as a community health provider we offer options that are accessible and develop a system that is easy for patients to remember year-to-year."

As flu and cold season approaches, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all community members who are at least six months of age gets a flu vaccine this season. Additionally, recommendations include the following individuals be vaccinated as a precaution:

  • People who are at high risk of developing serious complications (like pneumonia) if they get sick with the flu
  • People who have certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease
  • Pregnant women
  • People younger than five years (and especially those younger than two) and people 65 years and older

The flu is a contagious virus that can be harmful to one's health. Flu like symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, cough, chills, muscle aches and a runny or stuffy nose can prevent individuals from attending work or school for extended periods of time. Immunizations protect against the flu and prevent it from spreading to others in the community.

At Saint Mary's Flu and Fit clinics, a patient's access to a variety of preventive screenings and immunizations will be simplified. Screenings and immunizations offered include the pneumonia vaccine, colon cancer FIT kits, bone density scans, mammography, Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS), the region's only FDA approved screening technology for dense breast tissue, heart screening packages which include a cardiology consultation, CT scan for early detection of CAD, lipid panel and EKG, as well as CT lung screenings. Patients will be scheduled on-site for any screening that cannot be done at the time of receiving the flu vaccine. Some facilities will have same-day appointments available, based on availability.
