    In 1994, four New York City library organizations joined forces to establish a single website to provide end-users a place on the Internet to reach reliable consumer health information. The City University of New York Office of Library Services (CUNY); the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO); theNew York Academy of Medicine Library (NYAM); and the New York Public Library (NYPL) - later joined by the Queens Borough Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library - had the goal of developing a website that would provide health care information easily accessible and understandable to the layperson.
