Acute Inpatient Oncology Unit
Our 20-bed Acute Inpatient Oncology Unit was created in July 2009 to better care for cancer patients. The Unit includes a dedicated manager as well as nursing staff who deliver compassionate, caring and highly skilled clinical expertise. Nurses in this unit specialize in cancer care and take pride in providing quality, personalized care. Our nurses are trained using the guidelines from the Oncology Nursing Society to enhance their knowledge and skills for the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy, as well as being able to expertly manage the side effects of cancer treatment. In addition, many are pursuing hospital chemotherapy certification by the Oncology Nursing Society.
Currently 20 percent of the Center for Cancer nurses hold the prestigious Oncology Nursing Society certification, demonstrating a commitment and strong knowledge base of cancer care. An additional 12 percent of the nurses hold certifications in other specialty areas that enhance the care that is delivered on the Acute Inpatient Oncology Unit. Research has shown that patients have improved outcomes when cared for by nurses that hold specialty certifications. Currently fewer than 5 percent of nurses nationwide hold a specialty certification.
The Center for Cancer provides monthly education on site-specific topics to further enhance the knowledge base of the staff. Also a twice-monthly study group is open to the oncology community to prepare additional nurses to become certified in the field of oncology nursing. It is anticipated that we will double the number of certified nurses within the next 12 months.
This investment in our staff has improved knowledge and has led to increased patient and physician satisfaction. Consequently, the Unit received an award for scoring in the top 20 percent of all hospitals in the nation in patient satisfaction.
