PHYSICIST HELVÉCIO C. MOTA, PH.D., D.A.B.R.
RENO, Nev. – Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 – Saint Mary's Center for Cancer has announced the addition of physicist Helvécio C. Mota, Ph.D., D.A.B.R. Board-certified in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Mota graduated from the Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and completed his post doctorate studies in radiation therapy physics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute at Buffalo, NY. Prior to joining Saint Mary's, Dr. Mota was the chief medical physicist at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Carolinas Medical Center in Concord, NC. As chief physicist, he provided physics leadership and support for treatment of patients, including clinical trials.
Previously, Dr. Mota was a leading member of the stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) team at the Pitt County Memorial Hospital at Greenville, NC and held the appointment of associate director of physics of Gamma Knife, a radiosurgical treatment for those diagnosed with brain disorders or metastases. As associate Professor at East Carolina University, he was the lead physicist that implemented CyberKnife, a non-invasive radiosurgery program for cranial and extra-cranial lesions. Throughout his career, he has supervised students for Master's and Ph.D. degrees, authored and co-authored 16 books and monographs and over 50 scholarly articles in major publications in the field of radiation dosimetry, medical physics, and radiation oncology physics. Furthermore, Dr. Mota has lectured at more than 50 invited talks around the world.
