Saint Mary’s strives to significantly improve outcomes by reducing
treatment time and increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.
Fast Track Evaluation Process
Saint Mary’s Emergency Department features a medical provider who
works in concert with the nursing staff who triages our patients. Care
can be implemented at triage if needed, and tests can be initiated even
before a patient arrives in his or her room. By expediting care early
on, patient satisfaction increases and wait times decrease.
Computerized Physician Order Entry
Saint Mary’s utilizes a computerized physician order entry, which
reduces the risk of treatment and medication errors. The hospital also
uses arm band scanners for each patient which increases efficiency and
provides additional safety mechanisms for patients.
When it comes to heart attacks, the faster the intervention, the better
the outcome. The American Heart Association, Society of Chest Pain Centers
and American College of Cardiology all recommend a door-to-balloon time
of 90 minutes for heart attack patients. Door-to-balloon is the time it
takes for a heart attack patient to receive an angioplasty once he or
she arrives at the hospital. An angioplasty is a life-saving procedure
where a balloon-like device is used to open up the impacted artery. Saint
Mary’s interdisciplinary team of caregivers takes a collaborative
approach to patient care and is always looking for new ways to improve
door-to-balloon time for patients. We are proud of the fact that we lead
the region in door-to-balloon time, with an average of 77.6 minutes.
