Family Birth Center
Congratulations on your journey of becoming a parent. We at Saint Mary's
value this very special time and want you to feel supported from now until
post-delivery. As a patient of the Family Birth Center, we want to ensure
your experience exceeds expectations. Use this booklet to learn more about
the pregnancy and childbirth experience and how our providers help make
your journey to parenthood memorable.
The Importance of Pre-Registration
To make the birthing process simpler, we recommend pre-registering. The
process is easy and an appointment is not required. Simply visit our admitting
desk at 235 W. Sixth Street during regular business hours to register.
Please bring a photo ID, insurance card, anticipated due date, and contact
information of your pediatrician (if you have selected one) when you register.
When your delivery day arrives, all you need to do is go straight to Labor
and Delivery on the second floor of the main hospital. Once on the floor,
use the telephone to alert our staff that you have arrived and they will
check you in to a room. No other registration is required at this time.
What to Expect When Delivering at Saint Mary's
Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in a woman's life and
we are proud you have chosen Saint Mary's, as your place of delivery.
From the moment you walk in to the Labor and Delivery unit, you will feel
at home. Our team of nurses will guide you through the process and ensure
you are comfortable and supported during your labor experience. After
your new baby arrives, you will be assigned a post-partum room where our
team of nurses, lactation consultants, and your pediatrician will visit
you throughout your stay. We understand there will be many new faces you
will meet and encourage you and your family to ask questions by simply
pressing your nurse call light. Our goal is to support the health and
wellness of you and your new baby.
You will settle into a private room on the postpartum (Mother Baby) unit,
where our team of caring, compassionate, and experienced nurses will couplet
care. Your baby will stay in your room to promote bonding and support
breastfeeding, and will have his/her own bassinet stocked with all the
essential supplies needed to care for your baby during your stay.
Your room will include TV/DVD player, private shower, sleeping accommodations
for your significant other/support person, refrigerator if needed, upon request.
We have a very dedicated and passionate team of internationally board-certified
lactation consultants. While breastfeeding is natural, it can be challenging
in the beginning. Our lactation consultants are here to provide you and
your baby personalized assistance and information to be successful in
learning this new skill. You will receive at least one visit, or more
if needed, from one of our lactation consultants during your stay.
Our lactation consultants are also available after you go home. We encourage
you to call if you are having any breastfeeding issues once you get home.
If it’s more than a question and you’re in need of some hands-on
assistance, we will be happy to schedule a time for you to come in to
see one of our lactation consultants. We also provide a weekly support
group for moms to come ask questions, talk to other moms, weigh your baby
and get some breastfeeding assistance if needed.

Golden Hour of Bonding
Once your baby is born, we are committed to support your continued transition
to parenthood. Whether you have had a vaginal delivery or cesarean section,
your nurse will assist and support you in embracing the “golden
hour”. The “golden hour” is bonding time with mom and
baby during the first 60 minutes of life. Research shows the first hour
of life spent skin to skin maximizes the lifelong bonding experience.
Patient Support Services
Each month, we offer several ongoing educational classes, forums and presentations
on a variety of women's health topics. These presentations are designed
to inform and educate women about the unique health issues they face.
All women are welcome.
