RENO, Nev. – Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 – Saint Mary's Cardiology wants to help you get healthy by sharing five critical numbers that promote heart health. Each number is designed to get you healthy and help you understand how simple changes can have tremendous benefits to your heart. It is recommended that individuals keep these critical health numbers within the following ranges:

  1. BLOOD SUGAR – If your fasting blood sugar is below 100, you are in the healthy range. If not, the results can lead to diabetes or pre-diabetes. To reduce blood sugar, lower consumption of simple sugars found in soda, candy and desserts; get regular physical activity; and take medication or insulin if prescribed for you.
  2. BLOOD PRESSURE – Keep it under 130/80 mm Hg. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body and contributes to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis, and to the development of heart failure.
  3. CHOLESTEROL – Keep LDL (bad) cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL. When too much LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack or stroke can result.
  4. BODY MASS INDEX – Keep it under 25. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
  5. WAISTLINE – Keep it under 40" for men and 35" for women. A high waist circumference and too much abdominal fat puts you at high risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
